: : : : I had polio when I was learning to walk
as an infant. It was a very mild case, but now I
am wondering if perhaps it may have returned. I
mentioned this to the doctor who is treating me
for bursitis. I feel alone and scared as I know
what this disease has done to family and friends.
What type of tests can I insist on to either
confirm this is wahat I have or not. Thank you
for any support you can give me. Mary

: : : Hi Mary, I can't tell you what kind of
test to request, but I can tell you that you
aren't the only one going through this. My
mother had polio when she was pregnant with me.
Even though I didn't have it directly, I'm having
all the classic symptoms of post-polio. I have
found (and my mother was told this also) that
exercise is the best preventitive to the pain and
stiffness that comes from post-polio. I know
it's hard, but low impact exercise, such as
swimming, really does help. I want to wish you
luck. I'm afraid you probably won't get a lot of
support from the medical field. They seem to
have forgotten that polio was once a major
problem. Hang in there, and don't get depressed.
That's your worst enemy. Good Luck! Susan
