This is exactly what happened to me! Last March I had an ultrasound done and the technologist found an echogenic bowel. We were sent to a perinatalogist and had two other ultrasounds done and we talked to a genetic counselor. That was all in the same afternoon! The perinatalogist told us that there are different levels of echogenic bowel brightness. One is mild, Two is moderate and Three is high risk. There are percentages associated with each of these levels. After the perinatalogist studied my ultasounds, he said that the echogenic bowel was between a Two and Three. We were told that this could be an indication of Downs Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, swallowed meconium or blood, or an infection. We refused the amnio and any of the blood tests, because of the chance of false positives or negatives. None of their tests are 100% accurate and it wouldn't have mattered, I would have carried to term, anyway. After the delivery (September 28) we asked our pediatrician about the echogenic bowel and if it would have any impact later on. She said, "What echogenic bowel? I thought that was your's, not your baby's." She told us that she would call the perinatalogist and see what was going on. The next day the pediatrician called us back and said that we NEVER should have been told that it could be something as serious as Down's Syndrome or Cystic Fibrosis. She asked if we had been carrying this worry around with us since March?!
Anyway, that is what happened to us. Good Luck!

: : : My name is Kelly, I am 29 and the mother of a perfectly healthy 2 yr old. I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with my second child and results from a Level 2 Sonogram have shown a "bright spot" in the baby's small intestine. My husband and I were then told that this may be a sign of Cystic Fibrosis, Down Syndrome, a virus of some kind, or maybe just a blockage of meconium matter. Our world has been turned upside down with the news that it could be something so serious such as Downs or CF. We are seeing a genetic counselor and have had blood tests & amniocentisis, and are now awaiting the results of all these tests. We have been told that the likelyhood of CF or Downs is very slim, but we could always use more advice from anyone who is going through or has gone through this. So if there's anyone out there with a similar situation, please write!! Thank you
