: I would love any information on a splenectomy for the treatment of TTP.
: My mother-in-law is currently being treated for her fourth recurrance of TTP. In the past, plasma
: apherisis has typically worked to increase her platelet counts. This time, however, they just won't
: move -- even after 18 treatments. Looks like she will be scheduled for a splenectomy in the next
: week. Any thoughts?

Hi, when I had my splenectomy, I was 3 months into TTP, pheres didn't seem to be working, steroids either, next alternitive was removing my spleen. That was done the on the first week of June. Not sure if it worked because I still was having low platelets and still being phersed. But on July 20th things began to change for me, I was being phersed and a voice told me that not to worry because things were going to be ok, from that day on, I slowly started getting better, i no longer had hospital stays, treatment was not done as often evertything stated tapering off however i was still tired of all the meds, the pherses all of it. So in Sept of 95 I decided to try Vincristine along with pherses and steroids. by the grace of God my last treatment of Vincristine pherses and steroids was 10/20/95. I havent had any more bouts with TTP but have had two strokes one in 96 and 97, not sure where they came from but to date I am well. Would you please tell me about your mother in law, how old is she? How did she found out she had TTP? Will you keep in touch let me know her progress after the splenoctomy. This illness is so strange and I am still wondering why we have gotten this What does her doctor think it came from? Please email at [email protected] Thanks LH
