: I hope someone can help. For about six weeks my big toe has been bruised under the nail. There is a little bleeding from the end of the toenail when it gets stepped on.(basketball) Can I save the nail? How do I care for it properly? No health insurance. So a good home remedy would be appreciated. Thank you.

First of all, the bleeding is normal for a bruised nail. The continual bleeding is because of the constant trauma your toe is being subjected to -- the nail bed will not stop bleeding until you remove the source of trauma, i.e., basketball! Simply running, jumping, etc., will continue to place trauma on the toenail and it will be unable to heal. Soak that toe in a pan filled with enough water to cover the foot, add about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide (medicinal) and soak your foot at least twice daily. Dry it thoroughly! Apply anit-bacterial ointment to the nail and try to 'scoot' it underneath the nail plate. Wear nothing but loose fitting shoes with WHITE socks. Do not apply a bandaid or any other type of bandage. You need to reduce the trauma to the toe and foot, and keep it clean and dry. If you don't give it a break and allow it to heal, bacteria can invade through the tear in the nail plate seal, and an infection will occur. If you take a break for at least 2 weeks, the nail plate will heal and stop bleeding. Continue as you are, and you may end up with not only an infection, but you will be taking the chance of permanent nail plate loss.
