: Ok, it's due to medication, but at least I am sleeping all night for the first time in weeks! I take .50 mg of Xanax first, then a sleeping pill (flurazepam). Both prescribed by my Dr. because of severe insomnia. I don't plan on taking these two very long, because I know how addictive they can be, but for now it's great to get all this sleep! I also have anxiety, so am on meds for that too. Hopefully very soon, I can wean off the xanax and sleeping pills and just sleep naturally on my own. I don't want to become dependent on meds forever. Anyway, if any of you have to get something prescribed from a Dr. to sleep, I would recommend flurazepam. It's worked great for me! Just make sure you take it temporarely. Good luck!

Easier said than done Susan! I too have had anxiety/panic, but that was long before I developed insomnia. I took Ambien, and eventually it wasn't effective at all. I call it false hope. I understand having severe insomnia because once I only slep for 12 hours in a 72 hour period. That may not seem extreme to some people, but it was quite insane for me. I started to read books and educate myself on this horrible sleep disorder. I eventually stopped taking the Ambien because I found myself needing more. I advise everyone to be careful like you said because of addictions. Not only will you have an addiction, but your insomnia would remain if not worsen. Then you'll have two problems to deal with instead of one. I'm not trying to sound negative, its just that I've been there, done that! I'm not saying that I don't suffer from insomnia anymore, I'm just able to cope. My sleep has improved tremendously and without drugs. So what if you get a poor night of sleep! Your day still must go on.... It might be difficult, but I bet you're still able to function. I found that I am able to function with only 2 hours of sleep. I believe the reason being is that I am no longer afraid of the insomnia and I know eventually my body will sleep. I know we all have to work and having a sleep problem can really interfere with your job. Believe me I suffered and called in sick many times.Thats what gave me the push to help myself. Start reading, but don't read these insomnia self help books before bed, they're too interesting and might keep you up!I thank God every day because I have faith that one day this will all be behind me. God is good all the time!I wish you well.
