: I've lived with pain for over two years.Seen many doctors before one said to get an MRI,which showed an Herniated C5-6 disc. the doctor said the disc is pushing against the spinal cord, and I need surgery to releave my pain. Has anyone had problems from this type of surgery, and how long is the recovery. Thanks,David

Hi David,
I have had 3 levels fused in my neck as a result of an auto accident in 1972. They did my surgeries one at a time as I did not feel any relief until after the 3rd surgery. So I feel somewhat of an expert on the subject. I was in my thirties at the time. I think it is important to let you know that my doctor did all 3 surgeries from the front of the neck. This is important because they can access everything easier this way. Also I have to tell you that I came out of these surgeries very well. I was able to continue playing tennis, waterskiing, as well as working full time and being a mother of 3 small children. They took bone from my hip for all three operations and the hips were more painful after the surgeries than the neck. Of course I was in a neck brace for awhile afterwards, then went to physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in my neck. Today almost 30 years later I continue to have 0 problems with my neck and I am still active.
I think you should do fine. Just be sure that you have a good neurosurgeon with a good reputation. Then just do everything that they tell you to do. Also I am sure that like everything else, they have improved upon this surgery over the years. Hope that this will be helpful to you. Good Luck!! If you would like to e-mail me with any questions that would be fine. Also let me know how it went!
