: : My father had a massive hemorrahgic stroke three months ago. Luckily, he is mostly intact mentally except for some occasional confusion. He is confined to a wheelchair and needs 24-hour care. He has serious left-side neglect and is paralyzed on the left side. About three weeks ago he started moving his left leg a little and can occasionally move his left thumb and index finger. Still he cannot stand or balance on his own. Can anyone out there share their experience with my family in terms of if any one had a good physical recovery from stroke? Also, anyone had any positive effects from pool therapy?

: Hi Dora, I have responded with an email to you.

My husband suffered a massive stroke in March of 1999. He was hospitalized and on life support for 5 1/2 week, spent 6 weeks in a rehab unit of the hospital and then 7 1/2 more weeks in a nursing home for continued rehab before finally coming home almost 5 months after the occurence. He had more than a year of at home physical and occupational therapy. He is walking a little on his own, with a quad cane. I must put my fingers into his left hand while he walks; otherwise his hand is out of control. He has more strength than you could imagine, and his hand will take hold of his shirt, or move up to his neck, or whatever, and he can not let go. This causes him difficulty in his walking. We began aqua theapy in February. When he first began, the therapist and I have to work together to get him into the pool. There are still some days that he has difficulty putting his left foot down and is able to put weight on it, so it is hard for him to get into the water. Once he is in though, it is very helpful for him. When he first began, he and the therapist would walk in the water, him using his cane, and the therapist holding him up to walk. Now, they walk pretty well, and she even exercised his legs. This has been very good for him. Even though he did not enjoy swimming before his stroke, he is really enjoying his time in the water, and the therapist is great. She has a very positive attitude, which helps him tremendously. It has been more than 1 1/2 year now. We also heard about how progress only came in the first so many months, but we do continue to see progress, sometimes very slow, but still progress.

I would love to chat with you more. You may e-mail me at [email protected] I would love to hear from you. Maybe we could give each other pointers.

God's blessings! You are very important to the recovery process!
