: I am going in to have at least half of my thyroid removed on Thursday and I am very nervous. I have never had surgery before and am worried about that. I am also worried about what my life will be like after the surgery. I understand from reading this board that it is sometimes difficult to get your medication regulated after surgery, and I wonder how the disturbance in thyroid hormone balance following surgery will effect me emotionally. I really just don't know what to expect, so any advice y'all can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks. Angie

Angie- I had mine removed 5 years ago and the surgon scared me to death about the para-thyoids. I think it is normal to be scared but if it is the best to do to get well it is worth it. Make sure you follow up with you primary doctor and surgeon. Your primary doctor should be perscibing your meds( I goofed and let the sugeon do it and he put me on to low of a dose) It will take time but you will get it regulated. I felt so well after surgery I wouldn't have thought I needed synthroid. I had been hyper so long. My mental state was the best it had been in years. The depretion was gone and the snapping out of the blue also gone.

Things no one told me.
1. your chest may be bruised. This is from the removal they don't cut but pull.( It looked as though some one stood on me haha) 2. My head bobbed. I slight control of my neck. 3. make sure you get the window bed. less noise. 4. if your roomy is to loud tell the nuse they may be able to move one of you. ( my roomy was up all night moaning and I couldn't sleep) you could get a private room for a bit more a day here it was $10.00 extra(my husband had surgery last Nov.) 5. Stay in the hospital as long as you can esp if you don't have someone to help you around the house. you wouldn't be helpless but I wanted to sleep with the pain pills and going out to the store or cooking we're not easy to do the 1st few days home. I had my husband and freinds to help and were a phone call away.

I hope this helped a bit and keep asking questions. The hospital staff is usualy really helpful and caring.
