In Reply to: PROPLAST IMPLANTS/BRAIN TUMOURS posted by Judi on October 15, 1999 at 10:06:03:

: I had a Vitek Proplast implant inserted in 1985, which was removed in 1994. In 1998 during a routine
: MRI to check my TMJ's a brain tumour was found in the temporal lobe, very close to where the Proplast had been. It is a meningioma.
: In July 1999 I had a follow up MRI to check the status of the brain tumour, and a second meningioma was found in the frontal lobe. Both are about the size of a golf ball.

: Shortly after the first brain tumour was diagnosed I wrote to Dr. Susan Runner at the FDA asking if she had heard of other Proplast patients with brain tumours. She said that she had heard anecdotal reports, but that was all.
: I also wrote to the TMJ Association with the same information. In their most recent newsletter the mentioned the information I had given them. On Wednesday night I received an email back from the Association which informed me that they had been contacted by
: another Proplast survivor who had been diagnosed with a meningioma in 1992. She had her Proplast inserted in 1986 and it's still in place. This woman has had surgery four times to remove "growths" from her face, and three surgeries to remove "growths" from the lymph nodes in the genital area. All of these "growths" were sent to pathology,
: but she doesn't know what the results were. The Association also said that they had heard from another woman who knew of other implant people with meningiomas. I am awaiting further information on this.

: when I was diagnosed with the first brain tumour the surgeon who removed the Proplast told me that if I could find one more Proplast patient who had been diagnosed with this type of brain tumour he would put out an alert. I have notified him of the recent events, and
: am waiting to see what he does about it.

: Last night I posted this information on another TMJ discussion board, and almost immediately received
: a response from a woman in Maine who runs a support group for implant patients. She said that just last week one of the women in the group had been diagnosed with the same kind of brain tumour.

: I feel a real need to warn other Proplast patients about this problem. When you consider that these brain tumours are quite rare, only 34 people per one million, I think this information is very significant. If you know of any Proplast patients please share this information with them. If you know of any other websites where this information should be posted please contact me so that I may do so.
: My brain surgery is booked for November 18th, so I'm running out of time.

: Please help me to help others. Thanks.

: Judi.
