Susan, I think you have Meniere's Disease! Don't worry, it's not life-threatening, just annoying.

I have had TMJ nearly all my life. Its severity comes and goes. I have not had much of a problem with it in the last few years besides clicking and shoulder/neck problems that I think are connected to the TMJ. (I'm 95% sure this is all the result of stress.)

Anyway, last year I started having fullness in my ears, tinnitus, and dizzy spells (often with vomiting) that grew progressively worse. I knew about Meniere's Disease because my mother has it, but it took me a while to connect that to the problems I was having. I went to an ear specialist, and he prescribed Meclizine (also called Anti-Vert) and Valium. I take the Meclizine semi-regularly, Valium occasionally.

You can get Meclizine over the counter in the form of Dremamine or Bonine.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or comments. I really want to help people with this, because I know how lousy it is. The good news is that in the last month I have had no symptoms of Meniere's. It does tend to come and go, although for the first 10 months it hung around almost constantly.

: I have had TMJ for about 13 years. About six months ago, started having problems again with popping, clicking, etc. and not really pain but just a feeling of tightness and fatigue in my face and head muscles. Doctor gave me muscle relaxants without relief. Now in the last three weeks or so started having really bad dizzy spells with spinning sensation and a lot of fullness in my ears. My question is are all of these related? My doctor diagnosed labyrinthitis and gave me Antivert which I took but made me too sleepy. I also have very bad allergies and sinus problems. I told my husband I need a head transplant. Just wondered if anyone else experienced similar symptoms or it the dizziness was unrelated to my TMJ. Thanks.

: Susan
