Dear Bubbly,
I have recently been diagnosed with gallbladder malfunction, not stones, mine is currently working at only 6%. I am scheduled for surgery Thursday, Oct 9th and hope to be pain free. I currently have pain that is constant but varies in degrees of severity and it no longer depends upon what I eat or drink. The pain is just to the right and down from my breast bone and goes right through to my back. Pain, at times, is also felt under the right side of my rib cage and to my back giving me a feeling that my back ribs are caving in. I have also had many episodes in the past where I ate some lunch and by 5:00pm or so I was in bed in tears all night, but by morning I felt fine. This pain was VERY different from the other I described. I believe these were actual gallbladder attacks. This pain was directly under my breast bone and was excruciating. I curled in a ball on my left side and gently rocked back & forth. I couldn't even bear the weight of my hand on my stomach. I have also had sudden bouts of nausea and vomiting, though this is not real frequent for me. I have many problems with diarreah and constipation, like someone flips a switch, first one, then the other. Lots of intestinal pain. It is important that you know, I went to the E.R. twice in the past 6 weeks, all tests were normal. CT scan, ultrasound & bloodwork all normal. My BP was 167/112 indicating that I was in pain. SERIOUS PAIN! My doc ordered a HITA or HYTA scan? and that is what FINALLY found the problem. Do an ultrasound & bloodwork. If they are normal, ask for a HITA scan and skip the CT scan. Your pain is real and not everyone exhibits the same symtoms or results on tests. I am proof of that. You are in the driver seat, take control of your health. I wish you the very best of luck and hope this has helped you or anyone else. And please know your not alone, others know your pain.

Hi there. When my GB first began acting up, I noticed the nausea/gassiness more than anything else, with just a vague, fleeting spasm up under the right ribs. As time went on, I eventually had dull achy pain every day up under the right ribs, and through to my back with SEVERE, knife-stabbing pains in the same area during or after eating/drinking anything! The dull achy pain was like someone pushing up on me from the inside (like when I was pregnant and feeling my kid's foot kicking me under the ribs), and the feeling was all the time.

Otherwise, my other GB symptoms were nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss from not eating, and general feeling of ill all the time. I was so glad to have it out!

Good luck to you,
Katie G
